How to tell when your car needs new tyres

As a car owner, it’s important to know when you should replace your tyres. Not only does this help keep you safe on the roads, but it also helps reduce fuel efficiency and can even save you money in the long run. Here are some signs that it’s time to get new tyres.

Checking tread depth

One of the best ways to tell if your tyres need replacing is to check the tread depth. This is how much rubber is left on the tyre’s surface, which affects its grip on the road. In Australia, your tread depth must be at least 1.5mm deep across three-quarters of the tread width around the complete circumference of the tyre.

To check your tread depth, use a tread gauge or insert a 20-cent piece into several points on each tyre—if part of Queen Elizabeth’s (or King Charles’) face is covered by rubber, then there is more than enough tread depth to pass an inspection. It’s recommended, however, that for optimum driving performance, your tyres should have between 5mm and 7mm of tread still present on them.

Tyre age

The age of your tyres can also be an indicator of whether or not they need replacing. Tyres have a lifespan of around five years from the date they were manufactured—this will generally be stamped on the sidewall in small numbers. It’s important to remember that if these dates aren’t visible due to heavy wear and tear, then you might want to replace them regardless as they’re likely already past their prime.

Uneven wear & damage

Uneven wear and damage can also mean that it’s time for new tyres. This could range from general wear and tear caused by incorrect tyre pressure or damage caused by hitting curbs or potholes while driving. If any part of your tyre appears worn down more than other parts, then it’s probably time for an upgrade—especially when checking for unusual bulges and bumps along its circumference as these could indicate internal damage that’ll make a tyre unsafe for further use until replaced with a new one.
